Beyond the Music: Dolly Parton’s Generosity and Imagination Library

Dolly Parton will always be remembered for timeless songs including “Jolene,” “9 to 5,” “Coat of Many Colors” and “I Will Always Love You.” But her most meaningful legacy may be found beyond the stage—in the children, families and communities whose lives she changed through decades of generosity.

Dolly’s philanthropy was deeply connected to her childhood in the Great Smoky Mountains. Growing up in a family of 12 children taught her about hardship, perseverance and the importance of helping neighbors. She also saw how her father, Robert Lee Parton, struggled because he could not read or write.

In 1988, Dolly established the Dollywood Foundation to improve educational opportunities in her home county. One early initiative, known as the Buddy Program, encouraged local students to finish high school. Dolly promised participating seventh- and eighth-grade students $500 when they graduated, helping significantly reduce the dropout rate for those classes.

Her most famous educational initiative began in 1995. Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library started in Sevier County with an initial order of approximately 1,760 books. Its purpose was simple but powerful: participating children would receive a free, high-quality, age-appropriate book in the mail every month from birth until age five, regardless of family income.

The program began expanding nationally in 2000 and achieved statewide coverage in Tennessee in 2004. It reached Canada in 2006, the United Kingdom in 2007, Australia in 2013 and the Republic of Ireland in 2019. By 2026, the Imagination Library was delivering more than three million books every month.

The scale became remarkable. The program mailed its 100 millionth book in 2018, its 150 millionth in 2020 and its 200 millionth in 2023. By 2024, approximately one in seven American children under age five received an Imagination Library book each month. Local partners helped Dolly’s original Sevier County idea reach families in communities she might never personally visit.

Dolly’s generosity extended far beyond literacy. After wildfires devastated Sevier County in November 2016, the Dollywood Foundation created the My People Fund within 48 hours. It provided $1,000 per month for six months to families whose primary residences were destroyed or left uninhabitable. The final payment was increased to $5,000, and approximately $8.9 million went directly to affected families.

In 2020, Dolly donated $1 million to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for COVID-19 research. Her gift supported critical early work connected to the Moderna vaccine. In 2022, she gave another $1 million for pediatric infectious-disease research. She also supported scholarships, hospitals, disaster recovery and numerous other causes.

Dolly Parton died August 25, 2026, at age 80. While the world lost an irreplaceable entertainer, her generosity continues working every day.

Each time a child opens an Imagination Library book, Dolly’s message lives on: where someone begins should never determine how far that person can dream.
